"My Installer Said I Don't Need to Clean My Panels." Here's the Rest of the Story.
A lot of solar owners in Bakersfield have heard the same thing from their installer: "You don't really need to clean them. The rain takes care of it."
Your installer isn't lying to you. In a lot of places, that's true.
But it leaves out a few things that matter a lot here.
Why installers say it
It's a fair general answer. In much of the country, regular rain rinses off light dust and panels stay in decent shape on their own. Installers also don't want you thinking a new system comes with a bunch of extra work. That makes sense.
But an installer's job ends when the system is turned on. They don't see your roof in September, after months of no rain and almond harvest dust.
Why it often isn't true in Bakersfield
- We barely get rain. Around 6 inches a year, and almost none of it from late spring through fall, which is when your panels produce the most.
- The dust sticks. Overnight dew mixes with dust and dries into a film. Light rain doesn't remove it. It often just leaves mud streaks.
- We're in farm country. Harvest dust, field work, and wind coat panels faster than in most places.
- Birds. Pigeons love solar panels, and droppings don't rinse off in the rain.
What your manufacturer says
Check your panel's owner's manual or the manufacturer's website. Many of them do talk about cleaning, including how to clean panels when they get dirty and what methods to avoid. That's usually a better guide than a general rule of thumb.
Check your own system
Here's the easy way to settle it for your home:
- Open your monitoring app. Compare a clear, sunny day this month to the same month last year.
- Rule out the obvious. No new shade, no new equipment, no system alerts.
- Look at the panels. From an upstairs window or across the street. Dark and glossy is good. Tan, hazy, or spotted is lost power.
If production is down and the panels look dirty, they need cleaning, whatever the general advice says.

Text (661) 241-0533The bottom line
"You don't need to clean them" is good advice in a rainy climate. Bakersfield isn't one. Let your own numbers and your own roof tell you, not a rule of thumb written for somewhere else.
