How Often Should You Clean Your Solar Panels in Bakersfield?

Ask around and you'll hear everything from "never" to "every month."

Neither one is right for Bakersfield.

For most homes here, the answer is 2 to 3 times a year. Here's why, and how to figure out what your home needs.

Why once a year usually isn't enough here

In a lot of the country, rain rinses panels off a few times a month and once a year is fine. Bakersfield is different. We go most of the year without real rain, and the dust doesn't stop. Fields, orchards, construction, and wind keep adding to it.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has noted that in the Central Valley, dirt builds up fast enough that cleaning more than once a year can make financial sense.

The best times to clean

  1. Spring, before the heat. Your panels are about to hit their highest-producing months, and your AC is about to start running. You want them clean going in.
  2. Late summer or fall. After months of dry weather and almond harvest dust, this is usually when panels look their worst.
  3. After something big. Wildfire ash, a big dust storm, or a pigeon problem. These can cover your panels in days.

When you might need it more often

Let your app tell you

You don't have to guess. Every couple of months, open your monitoring app and compare a clear, sunny day to the same month last year. If production is noticeably down and nothing else changed, it's time.

You can also just look. If your panels look tan or hazy from across the street instead of dark and glossy, they need it.

The bottom line

For most Bakersfield homes, 2 to 3 cleanings a year keeps the panels producing the way they should. Clean before summer, clean after the dusty months, and clean after anything that dumps on your roof.
